EDIT: US has followed Canada in grounding the 737 Max.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Ends up being a quasi-ban for many parts of the US as well, as many flights to the midwest and transcontinental flights to the Pacific Northwest cross Canadian territory.

Probably. Southwest just started flights to Hawaii, and they and Hawaiian Airlines have been dropping prices. I saw some sub $100 round trip flights from the Bay Area.

i wonder if thats coz boeing is an american company....

You would think from Seatac or vancouver

Boeing is American yes, and the biggest operator of the plane is Southwest.

as said... hope it doesnt bite them in the ass
it probably wont.... but if you’re gonna ignore better safe than sorry.... welp*shrugs*

I know it’s a huge political issue and probably catastrophic event for Boeing shares and Southwest scheduling, but I think it’s only a matter of time before FAA demands grounding them as well in US airspace.

Bluff has been called, Boeing get your shit together.

Getting pretty glaring that the US is going out of its way to NOT ground these planes until we know more.
Given that Boeing has been actively lobbying the president it doesn’t leave me with the greatest level of comfort (also knowing how horribly inept the Secretary of Transportation is).
Add to that the fact that Secretary of Defense (unrelated in job capacity, I know) is a Boeing veteran the company seems to have a few good ears in the administration that might be willing to help them curry up some favor, over doing what is actually best for the safety of US citizens.

To clarify I would have no issues flying a Max 8 if operated by a US based carrier.

Vancouver WA’s a little far and Vancouver, BC would mean the ban was in force.
I usually fly out of Bellingham if I am travelling.

DGAC didn't ban the 737 yet, it's Aeromexico

Besides the US, I think a lot of the countries that haven’t banned it just don’t have much need to - like Russia. I’m sure Russia has some overflights, and neighboring countries that operate them in and out, but I don’t think any Russian carriers are operating them.

One Canadian operator parked them last night, prior to the ban. Something is obviously not right.

Yeah Canadian officials said there were too many parallels with the first crash, and also Ethopian’s CEO commented today they
had updated its training and manuals after the first incident. So either the training didn’t take, or there’s multiple issues.

It’s probably coming, but given the Trump factor and his man-crush on the Boeing CEO, it may not happen even if the plane is unsafe.

Bring back the Good Boeing airplanes!

During his news conference, [Transport Minister] Garneau said that on Wednesday morning officials and experts compared satellite tracing data showing the vertical path of the Ethiopian jet at take off with similar data from the Lion Air crash in October.
Mr. Garneau, a former astronaut and engineer, said that there were similarities that “exceed a certain threshold in our minds with respect to the possible cause of what happened in Ethiopia. This is not conclusive, but it is something that points possibly in that direction, and at this point we feel that threshold has been crossed.” ( New York Times )

Yep, given the Boeing influence on the administration,
I wouldn’t call the FAA an impartial arbiter
of safety at the moment.

Fair enough, but I’ve definitely seen enough that I would be sizing up the flight crew from the jetway and deciding if I needed to take a different flight.

Interesting last line in Air Canada’s press release (bolding mine)
:
MONTREAL, March 13, 2019 – Air Canada confirmed today that it will comply immediately with Transport Canada’s safety notice closing Canadian airspace to Boeing 737 MAX aircraft operations until further notice.
Air Canada’s cancellation and rebooking policies are in place with full fee waiver for affected customers. We are working to rebook impacted customers as soon as possible but given the magnitude of our 737 MAX operations which on average carry nine to twelve thousand customers per day, customers can expect delays in rebooking and in reaching Air Canada call centres and we appreciate our customers’ patience.
Customers are further advised to check the status of their flight on aircanada.com prior to going to the airport.
We fully support this decision and will continue to work with Transport Canada towards resolution of this situation as soon as possible.

It’s an American company, and they have some pretty tight connections with the US leadership right now. So it’s definitely pretty suspect in my mind.

yeah.. thats pretty much what i was suggesting... i guess i worded that poorly

Those were sold out within a few hours :(
Now they're all priced in line with the competition. Ask me how I know
